Many of the felines at the Helsinki Zoo are from the cold climatic zones of Asia. The Helsinki Zoo is specialised mainly in predators from cold regions as they are comfortable outdoors throughout the year and adapt well to the Finnish climate. For many people, Africa conjures up images of wide savannahs where herds of thousands of antelopes wander, and lions prowl in the grass. However, it is difficult to keep large African mammals in zoos in Finland's climate. Even the hamadryas baboons spend the winter in the Monkey House. Australia – the flattest, driest, hottest and smallest of the continents – is known for the diversity of animals and plants that are not found anywhere else. Most mammals are marsupials and monotremes. Tropical rainforests grown only in the northern and north-eastern parts of the continent, while the central parts are mainly covered with savannah, steppe and desert. Rare species of small monkeys live in the rainforests of the large Amazon valley. In addition to the monkeys, in the Amazonia House at Helsinki Zoo you can dive into a humid rainforest in the winter and hear the cawing of parrots. Helsinki Zoo concentrates on presenting the typical species of the European continent, from the Arctic to the deciduous forests and to participate in the breeding of endangered species. In addition to Finland's national animal, the bear, and the mammals of the Finnish boreal coniferous forest, Helsinki Zoo houses numerous owls and wetland birds. Helsinki Zoo has participated in the reintroduction to the wild of European wild cats, lynxes, minks and otters, for example. The animal species of North America's coniferous and deciduous forests are similar to the species of Eurasia. Today, the two continents are separated by the narrow Bering Strait, but during the Ice Ages, when the sea level was lower, many animals were able to migrate in either direction across the Strait.
