Art Meets Ice 2009
ART MEETS ICE. Ice will bend in the hands of sculptors, telling of threatened nature. The material itself - fragile, clear, fading - is a fitting symbol of nature’s frailty. International sculptors gather to create personal, passing testimonies in nature’s defence. With the coming of spring, ice melts but the message remains: nature’s fate is in our hands.
ART MEETS ICE, January-February at Helsinki Zoo, presents the art of ice sculpting for the 6th time, with themes “Saved by the Zoos” and “Frogs unlimited”. The event will be on two weekends. On the first weekend, from January 31th to February 1st, the theme is “Saved by the Zoos”. Artists will make works of animal species Zoos have saved from extinction, species that have the Zoos as last safe haven or species Zoos have been able to return to the nature. On the second weekend, from February 7th to 8th, the theme is “Frogs Unlimited” - we support the EAZA campaign to save the endangered amphibians. The works remain at the zoo until they finally melt.
ART MEETS ICE is now bigger than ever. 52 artists from 18 countries will compete in total of 4 competitions. The competitions on Saturdays are 4 hour competitions where the sculpture will be made ready in just 4 hours. On Sunday we have the 7 hour competition which will start on Saturday and end on Sunday.
