Tasks of Helsinki zoo

 
Helsinki Zoo is one of the old zoos in the world. Within the last few decades Helsinki and many other zoos have become active in nature conservation, including conservation, education and participation in programmes to save endangered species.
 
Zoos collaborate internationally to achieve these goals. Helsinki Zoo is a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquaria (WAZA), The European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), the Conservation Breeding Specialist Group (CBSG) and the International Zoo Educators (IZE).

THE WHOLE WORLD ON ONE ISLAND
 
Helsinki Zoo keeps about 150 animal and hundreds of plant species from the Arctic tundra to tropical rainforests and deserts. They include extremely threatened species that are maintained through collaboration of several zoos. Among them is the snow leopard, the emblem of Helsinki Zoo.
 
Over half a million visitors come to Helsinki Zoo annually. The zoo is an important disseminator of nature information but also one of the most popular year-round recreational destinations in Finland.
