27.2.2009 : Convalescents of the Waterfowl House

Last summer Helsinki Zoo received a few common gulls in a bad condition. At first they gained strength in the Wild Animal Rescue Centre and they stay at the waterfowl pool for the winter. The recovered birds will be released back into the wild in spring at the time of the migration of the gulls.

Bactrian camel lives in the steppes of north eastern Asia where winters are very cold. In winter time, Bactrian camels have a thick, shaggy coat.

Introduction

BIRD GROUP

The name of the group, ’Bird Section’, is a bit misleading as the keepers of this group take care also of some mammals. Earlier they only looked after the birds. A couple of years ago the tasks of the keepers were redivided between the different keeper groups. The bird group were made charge of the Mongolian wildhorses...

There are seven keepers working in the Bird Group.
