Bird group

2.6.2008 : Presenting the bird

BIRD SECTION
The name, Bird Section is a bit misleading, because the keepers in this section take care also of mammals. Earlier they kept only birds. Couple of years ago the tasks of the keepers were reorganised between the sections. The care of horses, camels and kulans was given to the keepers in the Bird Section. There are seven keepers in the Bird Section which is divided into four areas: Borealia, Kangaroo House, Mustelid House and ”Hack group”. Borealia House keeper takes care of goitred gazelles, flamingoes and the birds in the Borealia House. Kangaroo House keeper takes care of kangaroos, emus, peacocks, owls and bearded vultures. ”Hack-keeper” takes care of horses, camels and kulans with the help of a Mustelid House keeper who is also responsible for the care of weasels and waterfowl in that house. In Mustelid House there used to be several mustelid species, nowadays only one species, but the name of the house has remained. The keepers mainly works in one or two areas but when needed they are capable of keeping all the animals in this section.
